Driftless Glen

Fishing in Wisconsin’s Driftless region is the stuff of legends. A secluded fishery often not spoken of by those that haven’t experienced its glory.

I remember back to my inaugural trip to learn fly fishing with some close friends. Long days walking river and streams catching some of the most beautiful rainbow trout in the lower 48.

In a land dotted with Amish farms, rolling hills and countless streams, it’s about the most scenic setting you could imagine in the Midwest. Life is slower out here. The focus on quality and craftsmanship you would find in most small towns in America is paramount. Clear water, extremely fertile soil and an abundance of resource access makes for ideal farming conditions.

That first trip I remember sitting down to shake dice after a long day of fishing to an unknown bottle of whiskey being pulled out of the cooler. Driftless Glen. Seeing as we were in the driftless region, it seemed appropriate, but I had no idea it would turn out to be my favorite bourbon to date.

After a long weekend of fishing and evenings of becoming far too familiar with my new favorite Wisconsin made liquor, I had to take a deeper dive into it.

Driftless Glen isn’t just bourbon. With a full list of 20+ spirits, the standout is their brown liquor. From cask strength to port -finished to small batch, their bourbon selection is spectacular. Additionally, their 4 variations of rye cap off an excellent array of options. There’s something for the pickiest whiskey aficionado and even a single malt for me. And man is that one good.

I think I’ve tried almost all of them (that I could get my hands on) at this point, but there’s even more to go. Their brandy is perfect for sipping or makes top tier old fashioneds. Straight and flavored vodka for any occasion and even a few variations of gin that look fantastic. I’m not a gin drinker, but if I were the 114 proof Navy Strength gin would be right up my alley.

Geographically this is an ideal spot for a distillery. With an abundance of sand covering the landscape, it acts as a natural filter flowing right into the Baraboo river. That along with 100% locally grown and harvested grain, Driftless Glen really is a beacon of how Wisconsin can shine.

The Bemis family in a mere 10 or so years has turned a small craft distillery into a Wisconsin staple. With a focus on local everything, they do a fantastic job not only with the liquor, but the food is top notch and the distillery itself is beautiful.

With the distillery butting right up against the Baraboo river, it makes of a perfect venue. Anytime you find yourself in Baraboo, it’s well worth the stop in. Just make sure you have someone to drive you home.

Grab one of their iconic square bottles with the embossed fingerprints on the side at most liquor stores in Wisconsin and a growing number throughout the country.
